Apples are both delicious and attractive

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. I’m not kidding this is a good fruit to have. There are so many health benefits, you wouldn’t believe it.  According to Eat Well Magazine apples have five basic health benefits. Protection of heart, boost brain health, helps with weight loss, lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes and fights cancer.

Don’t forget that apples also can be paired with other foods to enhance the taste. Apples can be added to coleslaw, oatmeal, even a turkey sandwich. The possibilities are endless. This is an all-star fruit, enjoy with the skin on and make sure to wash it off nicely. Click here for apple related recipes.

The next item highlighted will be the most important resource we have on this planet.

70% of our planet is made up of water; more importantly, our bodies are made up of 60%. That makes water a big deal for our plants and our bodies. there are a million reasons why we should all drink more.

Don’t be thirsty, stay hydrated.

It’s necessary for kidneys and other body functions. Have bad skin? Well,  water assists with health and beauty. When skin is dehydrated it’s vulnerable to skin disorders and pre-wrinkling. Water flushes out the bad waste in our bodies which helps the digestive system. Water is an aid for the body and for plants, animals and basic washing.

It doesn’t get more clear (haha you get it). Water can benefit this world in many ways. Grab it in a bottle or from a purified system. Enjoy it on a hot summer day, or a dry cold day. Fun fact, water helps reduce a hangover. That should be an incentive.

Finally,  let’s talk a slice of meat. Here’s one of my favourites that are cost-effective and tasty.

College Fashion

Student fashion is far more important than the average person thinks. Dressing for success is very important and can be hard -Sometime it starts early in the morning

looking inside the bedroom closet.

Luckily, coming into college, clothing presentation is a relaxed topic. In

comparison to high school, where the dress code has more restrictions.

Choosing an outfit each day can be a struggle or a breeze for others. Both males

and female deal with different types of issues regarding clothing.

Fashion is many things; especially art and self-expression. Students enrolled in the

Humber College Fashion Management program are encouraged to make a

statement.

Program Coordinator Bruce Sinclair explains how students target individualism.

“There is definite room for self-expression and present a point of view. The

student’s build-up displays or mini-stores in Visual Merchandising, capsule

collections they create for Product Development, or the businesses they create in

their capstone project.”

Students typically don’t have a large income. Things are already un-affordable as it

is.

The expense of fashion is another headache for some. Clothes can be hard to buy

depending on the store or quality of clothing.

George Brown College graduate of Fashion Arts Morris Watson shares his thoughts on clothing for post secondary students.

“Quality versus quantity is important. Buying fewer, high quality items is much

more sustainable, plus higher quality clothing lasts longer. ”

Everyday fashion sense could be the key to someone’s success.

Buying items that will benefit and last a long time will have a great return in the

future. For example, for interview purposes it would be beneficial to have a good

pair of dress shoes.

Watching the hallways of Humber, students usually dress in different categories.

There are the students that dress based on program requirements, the athletes of the

school, fashionistas, and the casual and the more laid back.

Students in programs like paramedics, nursing, culinary, business, or fitness

programs tend to be dressed in clothing suited for their studies.

Second year business administration student Shanelle Facey explains fashion style.

“My style is a combination of cultural and professional. I practice my religion

while dressing as though I am in an office.”

She explains for many of her presentations, she’s expected to be dressed in

professional attire such as a buttoned shirt or blouse underneath a suit jacket or

cardigan.

Her teachers set the expectation for personal appearance high to prepare for the

workplace.

Clothing choice should never be an issue for students. Sinclair goes on to say,

“There are sites such as Fashion Revolution and various apps available to help you

research.  Also, think long term…look for high quality, well designed basic pieces

for your wardrobe. pay a little more, buy them less often, then have fun

experimenting with trends from your fast fashion stores at a lower price point.”

Humber is one of the largest colleges in the GTA with thousands of students with

different backgrounds and personalities. Students should express themselves

through the clothes they wear.

The importance of dressing for success should never be underestimated. Having a

sense of style or everyday fashion sense could be the key to someone’s success.

Choosing an outfit each day can be a struggle or a breeze for others. Both males and female deal with different types of issues regarding clothing.

For a man it seems easier to get dressed for a day at school. Not as many options as a woman.

A woman getting ready in the mornings can have many complications. Multiple bottom choices. There is the question of what is appropriate for students to wear.

Life, After Graduation

Many students face a tough reality after graduation. Thoughts pondering on what will be the next step after college.

More importantly, was the financial sacrifice for school a good choice.

Students often have issues with deciding if upgrading to a university an option for them to get a better paying job.

The college experience can be a good idea for many. Aside from all the stress and the complicated times that it creates, school can be the best years of one’s lives.

What happens after graduation? Getting full time work, specifically the area of study or somewhat within the field is the objective.

The frightening part of school is taking the leap of faith into a desired program, completing and wanting to switch careers.

Ask Tristan Philip. He is a Humber College graduate of Business Accounting from the year of 2014.

His love for business came from high school. He took an accounting course in grade 11 and finished with a mark of 90%. That was his indication to major in accounting for his post secondary studies.

“I was very good at accounting when I took it in high school which made me take the program in college. A friend that I went to high school with was going to the same school; which made my decision to attend Humber very influential.”

After successfully completing his program, Tristan realized he has no desire to continue with accounting. He is very pleased with his completion of post secondary studies. The years at Humber were very special, many valuable things learned.

“My years at Humber with friends were very good. Of course, the school work load of my program stressed me a bit but I was able to fight through it and graduate.”

Many students complete a bridge program between college and universities create more opportunities for themselves. Finishing school with a diploma and degree can definitely make the job search a lot easier.

Patrick Dennis is a Guelph-Humber bridge program graduate. He finished school in 2013 with a bachelor of arts and diploma in Media Studies.

“For me commuting to and from Humber each day from Scarborough was the hardest. Early on it really limited the activities I’d participate in. As the years went by I really fell in love with my program and the people in it. The instructors for the most part was knowledgeable and approachable and really created a great learning environment. I’ve recommended both Humber and GH to my friends and family.”

Through hard work, dedication, and taking advantage of his internship, Patrick has created a really great career in the multimedia and journalistic field.

“After a few years or contract jobs and internships with various media outlets, I’ve finally landed a full-time role in PR and Marketing. Not quite sports broadcasting, but it’s given me a chance to view another perspective and one that is more lucrative.”

Graduating post-secondary studies is the large key to success and great accomplishment. Whether working in field of study or not, having an education in never be overlooked.

Mistress

Here is a fun story I wrote for my Literature & Composition class. Fictional tale of two somewhat lovers. Read until the end, you are in for a treat.

Mistress

By Natalie Fraser

Olivene has spent the night at her friend Shemar’s lavish penthouse condominium. The tender and care from Shemar was the remedy Olivene needed after a long 8-hour workday. Dinner cooked by Shemar’s personal chef, prime ribs with a garden salad; dressed with her favourite guava dressing, and the finest chardonnay to drink. The magical night continued in bed with a homemade carrot cake for dessert and hot, steamy lovemaking.

Olivene finally returned home the next day after a beloved night. Her apartment greets her with the strong smell of dingy clothes, dirty dishes and burnt cigar shavings. Her motivation to clean came from remembering the night before.

“Why am I being treated this way? Get a hold of yourself girl! Shemar would never treat me like this.”

Olivene is a nurse for a local 24-hour Walk-In medical center. Someone calls in sick; Olivene works a double. Her personality trait screams peaceful phlegmatic. Best described as soft spoken, kind hearted and humble.

“Clive, please wake up. I need to get the groceries. Can you clean up?”  she said while shaking her husband, Clive.

Clive was passed out from a night of playing poker, smoking cigars and drinking loads of alcohol with his friends. This was typical behaviour for Clive, selfish and self-righteousness would be common behaviours. He felt as though he was the alpha male, head of household.

Back in college, Clive was the man on campus. He was captain of the school basketball team, held a 4.0 GPA, head of his fraternity; a real man. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious ankle injury, which cost him his potential NBA spot and the love of the game.

Clive came from a family of wealth and didn’t really have to earn a living. He didn’t work and lived off his trust fund for years. Lately Olive was paying for most of the bills. He overlooked that fact and would expect her to perform her wife duties on a daily basis while working full time.

Olivene’s boss and co-workers would be coming over for dinner and she wanted to make sure the house was sparkling.

“Can’t you see I am sleeping? Jeeze Louise! Can’t a brother sleep in for once,” shouted Clive.

Olivene comes from a large family. Being the eldest of eight siblings, she had never experienced time of her own. Coming from an oppressed home of her father constantly cheating on her mother and alcoholism abuse. While studying at the University of the West Indies, she had a lot of responsibility riding on her shoulders.

Olivene met Clive six years prior when he took a month’s trip to Jamaica. Clive rented a small studio at one of the tourist resorts. There they spent the nights together on the beach dancing the days away. Within the first week Olive gave herself to him.

A week after Clive left, Olivene applied for a student visa for Princeton University to finish her nursing degree. Six short months later in September, Olivene, was on a plane headed to New Jersey having been granted a student visa to complete her degree. Clive was shocked to hear she was on her way to study abroad. He lived close to her campus and visited her weekly while she lived on residence. Throughout her undergrad, Clive would spend the nights helping Olivene study and was very supportive of her.

Olivene completed her Bachelor of Nursing degree on the Dean’s list and was class valedictorian. On The night of her graduation dinner in front of their close friends, Clive got down on one knee and proposed. A week later, they tied the knot at city hall. They concluded the night with a small reception.

“Please remember my supervisor Charlie Connor and my co-workers are coming over for dinner. I’m going to get the groceries, be back soon.”

There was a higher paid position available that had her name all over it. Olivene knew after hosting a lovely dinner, the position would practically be handed to her.

Clive ignored her and continued sleeping. She shook her head and went back to cleaning. She went to the store, and picked up the necessary ingredients for dinner.

Finally, she reached home with multiple bags in hand. She called Clive from the driveway to see if he could help bring in the groceries. Ring….ring…..ring….ring, goes to the answering machine. Olivene goes inside and unloads the groceries. The house is in the same condition, dirty and cluttered. Olivene cleans the entire place and cooks a scrumptious Jerk Chicken dinner with rum fruit cake for desert.
Within fifteen minutes of everyone arriving, Clive comes downstairs looking refreshed. With a crisp white shirt, red tie, black dress pants and shiny dress shoes.

“What’s that heavenly smell? Oh it’s the food you are cooking. Awesome! Why can’t you cook like this on a regular basis?” He asks.
Olivene shook her head in disappointment.

“Glad you like it. Please set the table and turn off the food in five. I’m going to get ready.”

Olivene showered and came down to see the table set. Everyone arrived within minutes. Olive’s boss and co-workers had little clue about the tensions or abuse that lurked beneath Olivene and Clive’s relationship. Clive played his part well. Everyone enjoyed the evening. Olivene’s boss, Charlie stood up and announced that Olive was one of the top favourites for the promotion.

Clive proposed a toast.

“Here’s to a wonderful woman!”

Olivene sipped her champagne and thought about the celebratory intense intercourse she would be receiving from Shemar that night.

After the night ended, everyone left and Olivene began to clean up the dinner table. She had happy thoughts about the new position she would hopefully be chosen for. If chosen she would receive a substantial bump in her salary.

The new position would give her a transfer to the major hospital of the area as the head of the nurse’s station within the neurology department. Her thoughts were interrupted by the smell of a cigar and heavy cologne.

“Olive, I’m headed out for a night with the boys. Don’t wait up for me, I’m not wasting this outfit.” Shemar yelled from upstairs.

“Dis dutty bwoy tek me fi joke. Yuh tink seh ah me gonna wait fuh yuh? Ha! You musi mad.” Said Olive in her native Patois language.

Did you say something?

“No, I think you are hearing things. Maybe it’s all that champagne you drank. See you in a week. Have fun with the boys.”

Olivene chuckled as she finished packing the dishwasher. She knew by his tone of voice he would be gone for a few days. Probably to Vegas, his usual stomping ground. Thankfully she booked off some time off work, she could have some peace and quiet.

Clive left the house without even a goodbye. Typical behavior of his ungrateful and unappreciated character. Olivene finished cleaning the apartment and got ready for her night of excitement. She put on a sexy red halter dress showing off her hourglass figure. She curled her hair in ringlet curls and used her favourite J’adore by Christian Dior perfume. Freshly painted nails, vibrant red lipstick and diamond gold hoops accented her outfit.

Shemar arrived at the house and let himself in with his key.

“Hey Olive, I’m here. I can still smell the food from earlier. Smells great—

He couldn’t finish his sentence; it was cut off by the sound of clicking stilettos. Olive gracefully walked into the room awaiting Shemar’s reaction.

“Rhaatid! Hot gyat ah hot gyal.”

“I see that I have been teaching you well. Your Patois is getting better.”

She said while greeting him with a hug and passionate kiss.

“Here I saved you a plate. Let’s get out of here and enjoy a few days at your place.

“I have a better idea, let’s take a short trip. Anywhere you like.”

The couple initially met back home many years ago. Four years prior Shemar visited the clinic to treat a wound. Olivene wrapped the bandage around his wrist smooth yet firm. The way Shemar looked at her made her feel empowered. He joked and complimented her on her work. This gave her a good feeling inside, making her feel wanted. Most importantly, that she was creating a difference one person at a time.

Olivene was the nurse who treated his wound and he insisted they stayed in touch. They have always had an attraction towards each other and kept a good relationship. Shemar was the owner of a private airline. He would often fly Clive and Olivene around the city for no charge. Of course, Clive had no idea.

“I have always wanted to see Paris.”

“Alright, get your passport and a couple things, I will tell Marcus to fuel and warm up the jet.”

Olivene didn’t tell her husband she left the country, she knew he wouldn’t notice her missing. Seven days went by and Olivene still had not returned home. Clive became furious because he was tired of the parties at the house and the escorts he hired. He was craving some more of the food Olive cooked a week prior.

On the eight day, Olivene returned home after a week of wining, dining and the best romance she had ever experienced. At that moment, she vowed to herself that it was time for a change. She wanted to start fresh just like her career. Olivene retained Shemar’s most trusted lawyers and realtors and began her change. All within 6 weeks she drafted up divorce papers and put her apartment on the market. Clive had no idea what was going on. He continued his verbal abusive ways and had no idea what he had coming to him.

Clive came home from another night out with his buddies. He was slightly hung over and reeked of cheap stripper’s perfume and booze. When he walked in the door he seen three large manila envelopes with a letter on top addressed to him from a lawyer’s office.

Before he could read it, the phone range.

“Hello?”

“Hello, is this Clive Wilson.?”

“Yeah who I am I speaking with”

“This is Harry Rottman, Attorney at law. Please listen carefully to these instructions. You will see three envelopes on your kitchen table. The first one is a divorce settlement. Inside there is information on counsel Mrs. Wilson hired for you. There are no fees for your representation. The second is a restraining order for you to not go anywhere near my client Mrs. Wilson within 1000 yards. The third envelope contains the realtor information on the sale of Mrs. Wilson’s apartment. You will need to vacate the apartment with all your belongings within 30 days. After signing the divorce agreement, you will receive a $15,000 cheque. This money is not owing to you since you didn’t contribute to the household. Consider it a gift for yourself. That is all the money you will receive. The letter explains all this information in detail. You have every right to refuse this information I am giving and file a counter lawsuit. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call my office. The phone number is on the letter. Have a good day.” Click-

Clive stood there dumfounded.

“I’m gonna kill this Bitch!”

He hung up the phone and looked over the information and contacted the counsel Olive provided. After meeting with the attorney, Clive insisted he should sue Olivene for millions of dollars for giving him emotional distress. His attorney explained he had no grounds or evidence. No contribution to the household, had not been employed for years to pay for legal fees and did not own any possessions with his spouse; everything was in her name. The cars, the credit cards/bank accounts, and the apartment.

“Take the deal Mr. Wilson, you do understand you are fighting a battle you cannot win. Your wife has the strongest representation in the state of New York. Also, she’s giving you money that’s not rightfully yours. Take the deal, find employment and support yourself.”

Clive signed the necessary documents and left the office. He was in complete shock of how is life came crashing down in a matter of months. Pondering if he really did love Olive and didn’t really appreciate her presence. The next few days Clive received his $15,000 and left the apartment never to be seen again.

Once Olivene got the news of Clive accepting the proposal, she was excited. Finally, she can live a life of happiness with her new spouse. She called Shemar into the room and gave him the good news.

“Thank you for everything babe, now I can finally be myself.”

“No problem my love, I am glad your nightmare has finally ended. Now let’s celebrate with some champagne.”

“No drinks for me, I will take some apple juice.”

Shemar looked at her strange. He wondered why she was continuously refusing her favourite champagne.

“You’re probably wondering why I haven’t had a drink in a while. Well, I have a surprise for you.”

She pulled out an ultrasound photo. Shemar’s eyes opened wide and was in complete shock. The two danced the night away in excitement. Seven months later they welcomed a beautiful baby girl name Lia Rose Williams into the world.

She was very beautiful, a perfect combination of Olivene and Shemar. The new family lived happily ever after never to experience the nightmare of Clive again.

Fashion Importance

At the intersection of Yonge and Dundas downtown Toronto. The walk signal goes off for all the street corners. There are hundreds of residents and tourists walking through the intersection wearing bright colours, different patterns. Each person is wearing a different outfit and is displaying their own unique style

“Fashion is very expensive, almost like painters painting. Im saying, this is my art.” Morris Watson, George Brown Fashion Design graduate shared thoughts.

It’s clear fashion is an important part of our society. It also has many layers to the topic and is more important to you think. Fashion is of the interest to anyone who wears clothes and as a result a multi-billion-dollar industry with presence all over the world. It’s a way of expressing someone’s true identity. Current Ryerson University Fashion Design student Alexandra Jones Fiddes shares her take on current fashion relevance.

“Fashion is relevant because everyone is affected by it. Even if a person doesn’t follow fashion it will affect them indirectly,” she says.

It maps out the way we look, how we perceive ourselves and spend our money. Since the 2005 Consumer Trends Report, the retail sector has continued to play an increasingly vital role in the Canadian marketplace. In 2011, the sector generated $457.4 billion in retail sales and represented approximately 12% of the Canadian workforce.

Of this 457 billion in sales approximately 15% comes from the apparel and beauty sectors. Susan Roberton Program Coordinator of Humber College’s Fashion Design talks about fashion employment and effectiveness.

“Fashion is a huge employer in Canada and across the world.  It is an area that interests and engages many people.  It is a unifying force that pulls together consumers from all cultures and countries. ”

According to a Statistics Canada Household Survey, from 2011-2013 there were 3,990,050 of jobs. The annual average income is $50,300 based on all occupations.

Fashion intertwines with many different subjects, with designers need a background in business, drawing and sewing skills. The topic of fashion is more than just an art. A subject offered as a post secondary study option, math and a science element. Morris Watson, graduate of Fashion design from George Brown College shares.

“The fashion world contributes to society by showing us the colours that’s in for the season and also what the fashion trends are coming back in style.
While celebrities and the media set fashion trends and are role models for many who provide insight. They inspire us to look remarkable. Many of them have gone onto become clothing designers, showcasing load of talent. Sometimes inspiration is from the people around us. Alexandria Fiddes Jones’ inspiration comes from her family.

“My great grandfather Alexander Fiddes was a fashion artist for Eaton’s and Tip Top Tailors.

My grandmother, his daughter, became interested in the fashion industry through him. My grandmother taught me how to draw and gave me her old sewing machine when I was 12. She was a huge inspiration for me and encouraged me to go into the fashion industry.”

The fashion industry influences the world in many different ways. From the billboards to the stranger passing by on the street; we all determine the way we look by inspiration and creativity. Our surroundings have a huge impact on a person’s fashion sense. For example, in a 2015 Elle Canada article, Toronto born designer Tanya Taylor’s explained her inspiration for her spring/summer 2015 collection came from a recent trip to African countries Kenya, Tanzania, and Morocco. The vibrant colours on the inhabitants and the beautiful agriculture was her motivation behind her designs. Taylor’s designs were featured in the 2015 New York Fashion Week.

We cannot underestimate the importance of fashion. One positive is that many clothing lines have catered to the plus size community. Large retailers such as, Old Navy, Forever 21, and H&M have a plus size section full of trendy clothing. Stores like Torrid, Penningtons, and Addition Elle only have clothes available for the plus size women. 20 years ago, it was a lot harder for someone considered plus size to find proper clothing. The variety didn’t exist In trendy clothing creating issues for both men and women. Thus, fashion has come a long way, catering to shapes and sizes. Fiddes Jones mentioned her thoughts on the variety of fashion.

“The fashion industry is changing and calling for more diversity from sizes to skin colour and paying closer attention to environmental concerns”

Graphic T-shirt Designer Jenyo Aladejebi makes sure he caters to all shapes and sizes with his designs.

“If the size is not listed on the site, let us know what product and size you would like to purchase. We cater to most shapes and sizes for our apparel. ”

We cannot undermine the importance. There is no mistake about the role it plays on women. We cannot under estimate the importance of fashion. There is no mistake about the role it plays on women. As adults, we often worry, “Am I am too fat, does my hair look blonde enough, am I beautiful without make up, is my body too thin?” A lack of self-esteem and confidence can lead to some troubling disorders, like anorexia or push to consume steroid to accomplish the picture. Undoubtedly these problems still exist today, but are slowly diminishing. Fashion is a unique and refreshing subject. Constantly changing for the better for everyone to be accepted.
According to a 2012 Canadian Public Health Agency article, dangerous and unrealistic cultural ideas of slimness and muscularity have affected all the age groups. We all see the prominent celebs on television and wish to look like them. Young people often feel dissatisfied with their body weight and size. In many situations, young adults with a healthy weight suffer from body image issues.

The rich and famous fashion icons do impact our lives in important ways. they provide us all with entertainment. Let’s be honest living in a society without and vibrant fabrics and the Victoria Secret Fashion show, life would be boring.

We should think of fashion as an everyday asset to our everyday world. It’s everywhere we look. We all put on clothes each day and accessorize. As humans, were a remarkable species that comes in all shapes, sizes and colours nut possess the same genetic makeup. Fashion is self expression. Staying in tune to fashion magazines is a great way to keep up with current trends. No matter who you are, make a statement.

His parents wanted to him to complete all education levels. “Go to school forever”, as he called it.

It was important, but there are other skills you may need to acquire. A big thing in Nigerian culture is for a man to support his family.

They were hesitant at first hearing about a fashion line. As time went on, they have been very supportive of his dreams. Always checking in and spreading the word to family and friends.
The support makes him feel as though he’s on the right track, but his parents may have reservations about it. Reinforces the idea of staying clutch, got to pursue dreams.

Here’s how the clothing line business unfolded. Clutch Life 85 launched in 2014 as a graphic t-shirt and apparel company. Best described as a variety of clothing that seek to inspire to your aspirations, be who you are and something greater.

“It’s a one-man show. Started out with two business partners. Now it’s just me.”

It started out as a part time business venture, to gain a secondary flow of income, and then life happened. After being laid off from a telemarketing sales job, Jenyo changed careers. He’s now focusing on building a foundation, so that one day the fashion line will become his main source of income.

Inspiration came from a lack of freedom going to a Catholic high school with uniforms. He liked seeing his friends in urban brands like Nike, Jordan, and Fubu. Sadly, the brands were not affordable.

He started wearing blank shirts but eventually gravitated to graphic tees. Some of the shirts really stood out, like shirts really spoke to his personality and character.

After spending hundreds of dollars, he felt something was missing, like there was something lacking on shirts. He started to think about what he wanted to see.

He started imagining a t-shirt brand and questioned what would it mean and what would the line carry.

“Every day you have a chance to win at something in your life.  Meaning taking the opportunity at being better and to pursue your dreams.”

In early stages, Staying Clutch made sense for the company name. It really resonated and stuck with him.

Within his personal life, he was dependable amongst his friends and family. He took that to heart and internalized it into his clothing line.

His most popular design is the T Dot collection. It’s all about representing Toronto. The world-wide section incorporates any flag into the T Dot logo.

“It’s been really cool reaching out to people from a variety of different places. Seeing the joy of their faces when they see they’re flag within a logo that represents the city of Toronto. It’s like representing two things at once.”

Jenyo is looking to take the brand to new levels. He wants to give back and spread awareness. Use the company to travel, bring Clutch and Toronto world-wide.
